Riddle—AVAILABLE

Adoption Fee: $3500
Subject to increase with additional training
Riddle embodies the classic Devil’s Garden characteristics
Criollo? Morgan cross? Nope—pure mustang!
She’s as kind as she is lovely
Looking right at home in dressage tack!

Riddle is a 2012, 14.3hh mare from the Devil’s Garden HMA in California. This area is in high demand for its sturdy, quiet horses with lots of draft ancestry. The classic DG color is bay, but the region also produces cream dilutes, roans, and the occasional blue eye. Most horses from Devil’s Garden are relatively low energy and forgiving, making them excellent first-timer mustangs. However, individuals with more cavalry and ranch horse ancestry can be extremely athletic. DG horses range from pony-sized (with some under 14 hands) to 16 hands, with a few even taller.

Riddle was adopted from the USFS in spring 2021 and spent a year at another training facility. For whatever reason, she didn’t make much progress, and her original adopter realized that they probably wouldn’t be a great match for each other. She was donated to RAMS in April 2022 and has since blossomed into a clever, engaged mare with a ton of potential as a riding horse—for the right person.

Riddle has lived with a mixed herd in three-strand electric fencing. She is, of course, still green but has a solid start in:

  • Catching
  • Leading
  • Grooming
  • Handling & trimming feet**
  • Bathing with a hose
  • Fly spraying
  • Taking oral medication
  • Vaccinations
  • Dental care
  • Backing, yielding HQ, yielding shoulders, and side passing in hand
  • Lunging (flat and over jumps up to 24”)
  • Ground driving
  • Saddling (has free lunged wearing English & Australian saddles)
  • 3 rides (walk only)

Riddle is extremely smart and has effectively “learned to learn.” We can talk your ear off about the mental and emotional transformation this mare has undergone! However, she will require a confident handler, preferably with prior training experience, to ensure that her confidence stays high. While she is sensible and has never shown any tendency to be aggressive, she is sensitive and has the potential to spook and bolt. We will ask that prospective adopters come visit her and learn about her particularities in person before taking her home.

We are not aware of any significant physical limitations, but we would recommend a PPE to ensure that she will be suitable for an adopter’s future plans.

Riddle is likely to excel in:

  • Dressage
  • Eventing
  • Endurance/CTR
  • Reining

Buck—Available to the Perfect Home

Domestic Born & Well Handled

Buck is a 2021, 13.3hh (string tested to 15.1hh) gelding born to a mare from the Devil’s Garden HMA in California.

Buck was born on our farm to a very special mare named Moose who came to us pregnant and injured in early spring 2021. We had intended to make both Moose and Buck available to adopters, but we tragically lost Moose in a paddock accident as we were preparing her to ride. It’s since been hard to imagine letting Buck go, but we know his perfect person is out there somewhere.

Buck’s gorgeous chocolatey coat and near-white mane and tail aren’t the only special things about him
The very first foal born on our farm, in the wee hours of July 22nd, 2021, under the Buck Moon

As such, he’s technically available—to the absolute perfect home, preferably nearby, where we can visit and keep him in our lives.

Buck is shedding out to a gorgeous chocolatey chestnut with a white-blond flaxen mane and corkscrew-curly tail. He string tests comfortably above 15 hands, and he’s showing all signs that he will be an athletic, flashy, smart, and willing partner in absolutely anything his person might want to do with him. Once he’s old enough and he’s got a solid start under saddle, we even think he’d make an incredible youth horse.

Buck has been as well-handled as any domestic foal. He’s had multiple trims, and he’s up to date on vaccines and dewormers. He has shown a tendency toward locking stifles during growth spurts, but we have no reason to believe that problem will persist when he’s not growing like a weed.

Buck is likely to excel in:

  • Endurance/CTR
  • Eventing
  • Dressage (you should see him trot around the field!)
  • Cattle work (he sure loves to chase my dog around)

If you think you’re a perfect match for Buck, send us an email at risingactionmustangs@gmail.com and tell us why!

Phainopepla—Staying to Saddle Start

Pepper surveying her surroundings on her first walk to the back fields

Phanopepla (Pepper for short) is a 2018, 15.1hh (string test 15.3hh) mare from the Silver King HMA in Nevada. Silver King, like its neighboring Eagle HMA, is known for energetic, sporty horses that may tip over into “hot” temperaments. These horses tend to be plain colors, with the occasional cream, and come in a wide range of sizes, from 13.2hh to well over 15 hands.

Pepper is a very special mare. She is extremely social and wasted no time learning about scratches. When she sees something scary, she looks for a good angle to investigate it. Once she’s put on some weight, nothing is going to stand in her way.

Pepper’s progress as of January 25th:

Pepper is showing signs that she could be a stunning ambassador for mustangs in the English sporthorse world. She will stay at RAMS to be started under saddle and may be part of a new youth leasing pilot project.

Kingfisher—Available soon!

Kingfisher is a 2013, 15.2hh gelding from the Devil’s Garden HMA in California.

King is highly athletic and seems both sensitive and sensible, making him a prime candidate for an eventual sport home. While his tag just came off, we think his lovebug days are just around the corner!

King’s progress as of January 17th:

King is out with the other geldings! Something clicked over the last month or so, and we’ve officially got a friendly, chill guy on our hands. This guy is really warming up to the perks of being domestic, and he’s going to make a real steady Eddie under saddle one day.

Kittiwake—Raising a Filly

Despite good nutrition and high calorie intake, Kitty’s body has been prioritizing her baby’s health over her own. We are working with our vet to get as much weight on her as we can.

Kittiwake (Kitty for short) is a 2016, 14.3hh mare from the Devil’s Garden HMA in California.

Sphinx is as clever and curious as she is spunky—we just know she’ll be a real firecracker!

Kitty is an expressive, confident, and curious mare with a big head and a bigger attitude. She was gathered in fairly poor condition, so she needs to put on some weight before she can really get going with training.

To sponsor Kitty’s journey, please contact us.

Kitty’s progress as of December 1st

Kitty has been turned out with baby Sphinx to put on weight and muscle. Mama is still very sensitive and has a large bubble of personal space, while baby is turning into a super outgoing little meatball with all the opinions in the world. Both Kitty and Sphinx will be available to adopters once they are weaned and well handled!

Winter—Long Term Project

Winter’s tag came off in October 2021, but she had a long story to tell before she could be ready for adoption
Fresh from a bath, you can really see Winter’s unique spotting pattern

Winter is a 2016, 14hh mare from the Warm Springs HMA in Oregon. This area is known for producing tall, athletic horses in any color you could want, including pinto, cream, and Appaloosa! Horses from Warm Springs excel in high-energy sports like eventing and endurance. However, they are kind and intelligent enough to make good family horses as well. Warm Springs horses typically range from 14.2hh and up, with some individuals clearing 16 hands.

Winter has lots of energy and a strong personality. She is highly sensitive to touch and will need at least an intermediate adopter working with a trainer. She is currently in basic training and will be available once her medical concerns have been addressed.

To sponsor Winter’s journey, please contact us.

Winter’s progress as of December 1st:

Though she still has a lot of work to do before her back end is fully safe to handle, Winter is making huge strides. Some combination of fixing her teeth, turning her out on pasture, and adding magnesium and raspberry leaf to her diet have helped her stay much cooler and more collected during training. She struggles with catching in a large space and is defensive of her face (understandable with a missing tooth!) and hind feet. Nevertheless, she’s incredibly smart and has the potential to be an extremely precise partner in training.

Rooster—Long Term Project

Rooster is a 2010, 15.1hh gelding from the Devil’s Garden HMA in California.

Rooster is a shy, sensitive horse who took a long time to come around to domestic life. He will do best with an adopter who has experience with anxious horses. He is currently in basic training and will be made available if/when he settles enough for consistent handling.

To sponsor Rooster’s journey, please contact us.

Rooster’s progress as of December 1st:

Rooster continues to make slow, steady progress and turned a corner after starting magnesium supplements this summer. While he still has a very high flight drive, he’s a sweetheart and a tryer.
