Riddle—RESERVED
Adoption Fee: $TBA
Riddle is a 2012, 14.3hh mare from the Devil’s Garden HMA in California. This area is in high demand for its sturdy, quiet horses with lots of draft ancestry. The classic DG color is bay, but the region also produces cream dilutes, roans, and the occasional blue eye. Most horses from Devil’s Garden are relatively low energy and forgiving, making them excellent first-timer mustangs. However, individuals with more cavalry and ranch horse ancestry can be extremely athletic. DG horses range from pony-sized (with some under 14 hands) to 16 hands, with a few even taller.
Riddle was adopted from the USFS in spring 2021 and spent a year at another training facility. For whatever reason, she didn’t make much progress, and her original adopter realized that they probably wouldn’t be a great match for each other. She was donated to RAMS in April 2022 and has since blossomed into a clever, engaged mare with a ton of potential as a riding horse—for the right person.
Riddle has lived with a mixed herd in three-strand electric fencing. She is, of course, still green but has a solid start in:
- Catching
- Leading
- Grooming
- Handling & trimming feet**
- Bathing with a hose
- Fly spraying
- Taking oral medication
- Vaccinations
- Dental care
- Backing, yielding HQ, yielding shoulders, and side passing in hand
- Lunging (flat and over jumps up to 24”)
- Ground driving
- Saddling (has free lunged wearing English & Australian saddles)
- 3 rides (walk only)
Riddle is extremely smart and has effectively “learned to learn.” We can talk your ear off about the mental and emotional transformation this mare has undergone! However, she will require a confident handler, preferably with prior training experience, to ensure that her confidence stays high. While she is sensible and has never shown any tendency to be aggressive, she is sensitive and has the potential to spook and bolt. We will ask that prospective adopters come visit her and learn about her particularities in person before taking her home.
We are not aware of any significant physical limitations, but we would recommend a PPE to ensure that she will be suitable for an adopter’s future plans.
Riddle is likely to excel in:
- Dressage
- Eventing
- Endurance/CTR
- Reining
Kingfisher—ADOPTED
Adoption Fee: TBA
Kingfisher is a 2013, 15.2hh gelding from the Devil’s Garden HMA in California.
King is highly athletic and seems both sensitive and sensible, making him a prime candidate for an eventual sport home. While his tag just came off, we think his lovebug days are just around the corner!
King’s progress as of January 12, 2024:
King is fully halter broke and has done some prep work for backing. His intelligence doesn’t always make for trainability, but once he learns something, he’s got it for good. He is currently learning to load calmly into a trailer.
King has lived with a mixed herd in three-strand electric fencing. He has a solid start in:
💚 Leading
💚 Grooming
💚 Handling and trimming feet
💚 Vaccinations (he’s great with needles!)
💚 Dental work
💚 Yielding hindquarter & shoulder, side passing in hand
💚 Lunging W/T easily
💚 Free jumping in the round pen
💚 Ground driving
💚 Wearing English or Western tack
Winter—SANCTUARY
Winter is a 2016, 14hh mare from the Warm Springs HMA in Oregon. This area is known for producing tall, athletic horses in any color you could want, including pinto, cream, and Appaloosa! Horses from Warm Springs excel in high-energy sports like eventing and endurance. However, they are kind and intelligent enough to make good family horses as well. Warm Springs horses typically range from 14.2hh and up, with some individuals clearing 16 hands.
Winter has lots of energy and a strong personality. She is highly sensitive to touch, is missing an upper right molar, and will need an advanced adopter working with a trainer. She is currently in basic training and will be available once her medical concerns have been addressed.

Winter’s progress as of January 12, 2024:
Winter is on a rehab cycle of coming in for training and dental care and being turned out with the other mares to move freely and let her body develop. We are hopeful that we will one day be able to offer her for adoption, but she has work ahead of her.

Rooster—SANCTUARY
Rooster is a 2010, 15.1hh gelding from the Devil’s Garden HMA in California.
Rooster is a shy, sensitive horse who took a long time to come around to domestic life. He will do best with an adopter who has experience with anxious horses. He is currently in basic training and will be made available if/when he settles enough for consistent handling.

Rooster’s progress as of January 12, 2024:
Rooster continues to make slow, steady progress and turned another corner after starting on trazodone a few months ago. While he still has a very high flight drive, he’s a sweetheart and a tryer. We are hopeful that we will be able to turn him out with the geldings so he can live out his days in the field.
